Syrian Hamsters - Behavior and generalities

Features

Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) reach maturity at 17-18cm long, weighing 200g and their usual lifespan is 3 years. They have a very short tail. In the wild, their original color is brown gold- but raised in captivity two hybrid categories formed: "agouti" (still preserving original brand) and "Self". "Agouti" presents a variety of colors such as: gold, cinnamon, rust, dark gray, light gray, silver gray, yellow. "Self" typically shows different...

colors: cream, white, black, smoky. Syrian hamsters usually have short hair but there are varieties with long hair or no hair.

Syrian hamsters are nocturnal and spend a lot much of the day sleeping. They may be angry if they are awoken during the day. They are solitary animals and must always be kept individually in cages because after the age of 8-10 weeks they will fight each other. These conflicts can often result in serious injury or even death.

Hamsters reach their maturity at an age of 3 to 6 weeks and cease to reproduce after the age of 12-14 months.Females come into estrus every 4 days, so pregnancies are unavoidable if a pair is housed in the same cage!
